I think he's got the business model figured out. He's never been a director adept at handling big spectacle and he was never going to be able to make hits on a $200 million budget, especially with his screenwriting ability having deteriorated so noticeably over the years.
But M. Night is perfectly capable of spinning money making schlocky high-concept B-movies on $15 million budgets. Movies like Old and Split and even The Visit had intriguing premises and also allowed Night to really lean into the heavy-handed ludicrousness he does so "well." And now he's back to turning huge profits.
