When the average person speaks about FTL travel they tend to do so in two dimensional terms or plotting out a linear line on a flat map. They don't think multidimensionally. They tend to ignore the portion of relativity where gravity bends both space and time. And why is that? Because we still do not fully understand how gravity and time work. Just like Drake's equation, there are a lot of things in physics we don't completely understand, yet still apply certainty to that knowledge. Relativity says that using gravity would allow FTL travel to be possible, and make those time constraints possibly disappear. The concepts of shortening distances by using gravity to fold space, creating worm holes, and making transportation between great distances almost instantaneous, are supported by Einstein's theory. We hope that quantum mechanics will answer some of the questions and fill the gaps in our understanding, but only the arrival at a unified theory will tie the two together.
