A thing that makes that contract even more absurd is that it cost the Sharks a 1st.
They acquired Kane for a reasonable rental price of a 2nd+4th+fringe prospect, but the 2nd upgraded to a 1st (lottery protected) when he re-signed.
SJ managed a run to the conf. finals by virtue of that 4 goal powerplay in game 7 against VGK so it ended up 29OA. VGK picked Peyton Krebs at 17 (though I think SJ might have ended up around 21st depending how everything else played out in the alternate reality).
SJ essentially traded down 25-35 spots for the privilege of signing this terrible deal.
