They tried with Ghostbusters II and it was not great. 2016 had entertaining moments (Hemsworth stealing most) but it was not the same kind of comedy and was a mess.
Afterlife wasn't perfect but it captured a lot of the feeling from the first and that ending pulled all the right heart strings.
In my opinion, the original Ghostbusters is a near perfect comedy sci-fi. It'll be impossible to try to replicate it.
I think the best option is an ongoing series so they can take it in a different route and not even try to match the original.
