The sport check zone (the general admission section) is only on the west side (the side with the +15/c-train entrance). You can get in two ways.
Go in the Saddledome and either walk up the stairs in one the corner sections, either 201/202 or 222/223.
Or go into the big red tower (on the west side, near the big yellow tower) outside, and walk all the way up.
The first three rows (separate from the rows 4-20ish) are not general admission. You don't want to sit there and be kicked out by the ticket holder ten minutes before the game starts and end up sitting way at the top.
When I go there I usually try to get there around an hour to an hour and a half before puck drop. If you get there that early you will get your choice of seats. I wouldn't show up any later than 20 minutes before game time otherwise you'll have a pretty weak seat.
