I don't think Robin Curtis was bad as her replacement, of course Kim Catrell made them both look like amateurs when it came to playing Vulcans.
Alley has a different interpretation to these events from the interviews she has given. If I remember it was something like she was offered less money for the sequel and then according to Leonard Nimoy, she wanted more than DeForest Kelley. A lot of he said/she said.

Robin Curtis ruined the film for me, she shouldn't have been recast as it breaks immersion. They should have just created a new character like they did for ST VI - funny enough they originally intended for Saavik to return and become the traitor.
