You are not wrong there but when you look at the current and future structure of the team it doesn’t make sense.
The Flames simply cannot afford to acquire another high cap hit without sending one out unless they are prepared to lose 1 or more of Gaudreau/Mangiapane/Tkachuk.
Those 3 games layer require I think a minimum of $7M to extend each ($2M+ for Gaudreau and Tkachuk, $3M for Mangiapane) even then I would be shocked to see Johnny sign sub 9M or Mangiapane sign under 5.5M and why would Tkachuk sign long term for his QO? I think he would want more money to extend or he will just take the QO and maximize his value in the open market in a year.
It reminds me of 2019 when Mark Stone seemed like the perfect fit but there was no way of signing him unless the Sens took Frolik and/or Neal as cap dumps. Flames are in the same spot now. If they want to add a list layer who can be a long term piece I think Monahan at minimum needs to go. Otherwise we are just looking at rentals and Hoping our stats sign for less
