With the information you had this summer, would you have paid him as an elite NHL player for 8 years? He put up a .85 ppg pace in the last 2 years and there were/are serious questions about playoff performance.
The thing is, I don't think there was a discounted rate this summer. I think Gaudreau saw himself turning a corner, felt a synergy with Sutter, saw what he was capable of with new linemates and said I'm betting on myself.
No, I do not think they have a deal done in a drawer, but I think a lot of the reasons that Gaudreau bet on himself are the same ones that are going to keep him here. I also think there is more than enough mutual interest to get it done. I'm glad Treliving didn't panic and trade him in some terrible Hanowskiyan futures deal.
