Isn’t it possible that Gaudreau has stated he will sign with the Flames in the off-season, if they want to sign him? Why would he sign this past offseason at a low value? If I were him, and I wanted to stay in Calgary and maximize my value I’d tell Treliving: “hey, I don’t want to sign an extension until next offseason, because I feel like I can make more money if I have a good season. So I’ll bet on myself, and come the offseason if you can sign me for fair value, I’ll stay” seems very plausible.
