i view the trade as a win-win, perhaps trending to be a larger win for Florida.

We have to keep in mind the expansion implications. Flames would not have protected him and if they didn't would Seattle have selected Gio? And if not, and Gio stays in Calgary, does Kylington get the chance to emerge?

All these what ifs are interesting to consider. Ultimately they got a good return for Sam based on his value at the time. Good on Florida for buying low. Good on Sam for grabbing the opportunity.

It's a win all around from where I sit.
This is exactly it. The expansion forced the Flames hand. I think if he was on the team, he probably gets selected by Seattle. Flames in the end down picks and prospects and cap space from Gio staying. Who knows what this team looks like if Gio is still here. I don't mind the transition the team has made in his absence.
