Since we have zero facts about what Johnny wants on a long term deal and what Trev is willing to give him, it’s impossible to speculate what Trev should have done now or previously.
Sure it would have been better to have signed a Johnny for 8 years previously, but I doubt that Johnny wanted to do that, since it would have meant he would have been a UFA at a very poor time for him. He really wanted 5 years, but settled for 6. Like most players, they want to be UFA’s as soon as possible, not necessarily to leave, but to increase their leverage. Well, Johnny has all the leverage in the world now, even to the point where he likely even controls his trade market (not that there is any chance of him being traded).
If Trev wants to sign him now, he’ll need to pay whatever Johnny demands. Right now, what people think he’s worth based on comparable really isn’t relevant. He can ask for what he wants to stay.
