The proper correction for the decline in the quality of media is a decline in trust people have in the media - which is exactly what is occurring.

People lost trust in the media because there is an alternative media in the US that is very powerful and basically gives you a completely different story to the mainstream media.
Foxnews.com and NYTimes or CNN are basically covering different worlds.
It happens with super online people in Canada too. You see posters here complaining about massive CBC liberal bias, where in reality it has a liberal lean but nothing wild.
