A few weels back I thought Stienberg had a reasonable proposition; Monahan a 1st and a prospect for Hertl. Why does SJ do it? Obviously for the prospect and the pick. Plus you get Monahan as an asset, could he be flipped for more? Would Ottawa have interest? What about Boston? On the other hand the Flames add Hertl for the remainder of this year. Can they resign him? There’s probably good reason for both sides to entertain that option. And if he walks? Well, the Flames have that more more cap space to resign/sign players. If you took Monahan off this roster tomorrow with nothing coming back, there might not be that much of a material difference. It’s a risk I think they should consider taking. Bare in mind Sutter was pretty forthright about his, and presumably the organizations, intent to contend/win. Could have been lip service, but I doubt that. I think the Flames see themselves as knocking on the door of contention.

Monny has negative value today.
Hertl is easily worth a first and a prospect by himself.
You are essentially having SJ take Monny when they can get the same value and keep the cap space.
