This really was inevitable with how poorly planned the whole thing was.
Option A: Covid is a major threat, and a few cases will cancel the tournament, so everyone should be in a bubble the whole time.
Option B: Covid isn't a major threat, and we can keep playing despite some positive tests.
Instead they chose the worst-of-both-worlds middle ground. Super unfortunate timing with Omicron changing the risk profile dramatically, but the science not being settled enough to bank on that. But it's not like Omicron is a surprise any more, so it's a huge failure to not account for it and adjust the protocols in one direction or the other.
