Well, you could buy all the equipment and software, learn how to use it all properly, and do it yourself. It can't be more than what, several hundred bucks plus whatever you value your time at?
$45 for the first two hours is a steal IMO. If they're cherished family memories, absolutely worth it. Uploading old TV shows you recorded onto YouTube, eh, I can see why you'd be apprehensive to spend any money on that.
