You don’t even need to make them fair game to get blown up - goalies playing the puck in space is always a recipe for disaster.
It was banned because two guys were good at it.
And there is zero statistical evidence to show that it lead to any increase in offense whatsoever. If anything, it leads to more low event hockey.
