To be clear here, I think there is ample evidence to show that Kane is a despicable person all on his own, and I have no idea how much, or even if his endurance of racism was a factor in this. But I also think it is naive to posit that two black players on the same team must have been treated and regarded equally on the basis of their skin colour. It is also naive to think that just because Byfuglien is black this means he would have always come to Kane's defense in instances in which he was a victim of prejudice owing to his skin colour. It could very well be that racism was a contributing factor to his treatment by his Winnipeg teammates and coaches, and that Byfuglien either turned a blind eye to it because of how awful Kane is, or he could simply not have noticed for whatever other reason.
We just do not know one way or the other.
