So if Ray signs elsewhere (which is likely) the Jays essentially replace him with Gausman which is a pretty even swap on paper, but they also end up getting an extra pick out of it as well because no pick was attached to signing Gausman, while the Jays will get a pick whenever Ray ends up signing.
They also get a pick from Texas after the Semien signing today.
Pretty smart business by the Jays FO.
The more I think about it, I hope they are targeting Carlos Rodon now. There is a ton of upside with him if he stays healthy, but he won't require a huge contract and also doesn't have a pick attached to him. He'd also add another lefty to the rotation after losing Matz and probably Ray this off season.
