I think its true that a player can't go from below average or average to speedster at the NHL level.
Look at a guy like Gagner. His dad talked about trying to turn him into a speedy turtle. Former NHL dad with all the resources in the world, and a good work ethic, but the kid couldn't become an above average skater.
