My initial thought behind breaking up the floor and having an in-ground or partially in-ground garden is that it might benefit from some latent heat in the subsurface soil. It wouldn't be a lot of heat but it might help the garden.

I'd be surprised if that would be any benefit. The ground is going to be colder than your home. We use a heat mat for starting seeds and seedlings, because they benefit from that. Ground temp is going to be cooler than 10 degrees.
