If Monahan is your centre, what's most important isn't how effective he is, but how much you can take the puck out of his hands when leaving the D zone. That's where Monahan and Gaudreau worked so well, because Gaudreau handled the majority of the breakouts off of a 30-foot pass from Monahan.
Well, Kessel does love to carry. He’s not on a great contract even as a rental. Cap retention would be needed and even then Calgary might have to lighten the load some.

I sure dislike the idea of a rental (and I doubt he’s one of those guys who’d hang around on a year to year basis for low dollars). He’d cost a first plus a depth guy.
