Take it for what it’s worth, but Pinder has been saying the Flames have had Monahan on the table for a couple years now. I think it has been commonly speculated that Treliving’s pursuit of Josh Anderson included Monahan as part of the package and Kekolinen, who is a pretty shrewd GM, went with the package that included Domi. That’s somewhat telling how the Flames and others around the league view him.

People keep saying this and I’ve yet to see the evidence. He hasn’t made Columbus a contender - they spin their wheels as much as the Flames have. And, for such a shrewd deal, Monahan outscored Domi last year, with less games and a bad hip. And is outscoring him this year, though Domi has been out a lot TBF.
The terse response was about Monahan’s 200 foot game, which anyone can see has improved. It was a post driven entirely by narrative.
No one expects 2018-19 Monahan. If he was doing that, there would be no issue. He’s producing under his contract value, but he’s doing good things on the ice.
