If you live in an urban area where transit exists and you can use simple resourceful thinking to make do, it makes the hoarding rather selfish and unnecessary. Really reflects our true nature when push comes to shove. Maybe the post-apocalypse films weren't that far off about how far people could spiral in such a circumstance.
