Discovery started last night. On the good side, they really cleaned up and simplified a lot of the backgrounds and effects so it doesn't appear as chaotic.
Spoiler!
Book has become the most likable character in the series, though there's a serious lack of chemistry between him and Michael.
The problem is still the main characters. It was once again Michael to the rescue while everyone else sits around wringing their hands.
The whole exchange between the new Federation President and Michael was just awkward.
President - "I'm not giving you command of this new super ship because you're wreckless and can't let people go when you need to"
Michael - "I want to know why argue argue argue"
President - "You're just not ready yet"
Connor McDavid (Michael) - "Maybe I'll just shut up about it"
Actually no
Michael - "We'll pbbbbbtttt I wouldn't have taken your super ship anyways, this ship is my family"
Looks like they're going to rush Saru back after one episode away.
This years enemy is a gravitational world crushing event, so its the burn x10,00000. What does that make it? Nobody knows.
While I think the dialogue stuff was better, its still the same flawed structure. For the most part the crews are there to say yes sir, no sir, hell yeah, drop an Fbomb. But you just feel like they're on the bridge as pieces of useful furniture.
They had a chance to do something with the tension between Stamets and Michael based on his feeling of betrayal last year. But instead they upped his nervous tweeks and left it there, he actually had very little to do except scream that the shields were failing. Or basically doing that annoying simultaneous science $$$$$ style dialogue that they've been doing for the last few years.
Oh that whole opening scene with the butterfly aliens, just felt so awkward and they were playing Michael's terrible diplomatic skills for laughs.
