Hated the so-called pedestal then, hate it now.

Black jerseys were all the rage in the 90s, so the Flames made a feeble attempt to introduce a few smudges of black – not enough to cash in on the fashion, but enough to spoil the design and make it overly busy. There's a good reason why you don't usually see four colours on a jersey.

The multi-striped diagonal slash, which would topple over in a second if it were a physical pedestal, wrecked the symmetry of the jersey, interrupted the clean lines of the striping, and worst of all, dwarfed the actual logo.

The whole thing just looked intolerably goofy.
