My guess is that it has more to do with the way the North Atlantic is interrupting and slowing down the way the ocean’s vast conveyor belt flows. There were points this past year that it appeared the Fram Strait was nearly motionless as so much fresh water is being added there as Greenland melts off.

That caused an assload of weird weather effects this year due to the jet and gulf streams having totally different patterns. If water doesn’t flow the way it used to, it doesn’t mean that it won’t flow… it just changes where stuff gets deposited and with what energy in my uninformed and amateur opinion.
