But when you have a top 4 Defenceman and no realistic chance at playoff success or wanting to re-sign him then get a package to help in the future.

Teams generally never admit they have no realistic chance in the playoffs. Exhibit A is last years Montreal Canadians.
And Calgary had a desire to re-sign Brodie.
