I actually though TFA had great potential. I really liked a lot of the characters initially, and they all had, what seemed like, really great potential for various arcs. It would have been really easy to set things up for a simple, yet satisfying storyline. The characters were all pretty great in the TFA.
I think Rian Johnson recognized how simple the setup was, and due to this felt the need to "subvert" the storyline as much as possible. Problem was he didn't have enough knowledge, or seem to care about, the SW universe as a whole.
I have gone back and re-watched TFA, but the major problem is that it doesn't have much substance. It was purely a setup film, so it's hard to enjoy by itself, even if you can block out the next two films while watching.
