He was awful in the first five games, but considering that he was coming off major surgery with virtually no ice time in training camp, I don't know why anyone would have expected otherwise.
The guy is rounding into some degree of form, and his stats will look a lot less bad when those first five games are no longer 45 percent of the sample size.

Problem for Monahan is he still has no even strength points in 11 games this season. His line is basically out there to try not to get scored on, yet he's a team worst -5. At a $6.375 million price tag, he needs to help elevate his line mates to at the very least, an elite 4th line which is not happening right now.
I know people were dogging on Lucic a while back for being on Monahan's line, but Lucic has 4 even strength goals right now, so even he can't be blamed for Monahan's lack of production right now.
At the very least though, he's getting PP points, so maybe he can add some stock to his trade value. But with key pending contracts looming, his $6.375M may need to go in order to ironically afford his best friend's raise.
