I agree - all depends on how they value Monahan.
If they see Monahan as a cap dump that is only worth a 2nd round pick they can flip with retention then its:
Monahan (2nd)
Zary
Mangiapane
2022 1st
vs
3rd
Krebs
Tuch
2022 1st
And if they like Krebs/Tuch better than Zary/Mangiapane then you're not going to win that deal.
Honestly if the rumor of 3 top prospects, 1st, Monahan is true then I think Treliving had a pretty good offer out there and Buffalo just really wanted Krebs/Tuch.
Impossible to know for sure thought without knowing what the offer actually was.

Personally I like Mangiapane more too, and he has the better underlying metrics.
But let's be serious here...NHL GMs are going to value the 6'4" former 1st round pick over the 5'10" 6th round pick. Especially when both of their actual goal/points stats are pretty much identical last season. Add in Tuch's ties to Buffalo area and not shocking to see why they'd value Tuch more than Mangiapane.
My gut here is that it's actually Lindholm as the piece that Buffalo wanted from Calgary as their comparable to Tuch...and I don't think Treliving was doing that with top prospects on top of it.
