I can do most of the things I could ever do, but not for very long at a time. Also, my neck has a very restricted range of motion, so I had to blow a lot of money on a vehicle with all the latest sensors and cameras and things to make up for not being able to do a proper shoulder check.
The bigger worry is that I turn out to have a condition, possibly genetic, which causes my body to produce new bone as a go-to response to injury. One of my neck joints actually did a fusion
on itself (a doctor once looked at my X-rays and asked if it was fused surgically!), and my anterior and posterior longitudinal ligaments are both slowly ossifying. I also have large-scale boxing of my Achilles tendon on both heels, which makes buying shoes a challenge.
As you say, something not to #### with. I wish Eichel the best in his recovery, but realistically, he'll never be
quite the same again. A natural disc suffers wear and tear every day, and has the capacity to heal itself up to a point. An artificial disc hasn't got that capacity. Eichel may come back fine, but sooner or later that disc is going to wear out, and what will he do then? Best he can do for now is hope it lasts until he's ready to retire.
I don't buy the MMA comparison. MMA fighters don't slam into each other while skating 40 km/h, and they don't have 82 bouts a year. That's a lot of strain to put on a prosthesis, and I'm not sure what plan B will be if it eventually fails.
What, not the negativity you all were looking for in this thread? Sorry for the hijack. We return you to your regularly scheduled kvetch.
