The SJ deal was good fortune rather than hard-nosed deal making. The Sharks had just finished 10th overall when they traded away that 1st, and had picked up one of the best d-men in the game. I’m sure Ottawa’s management figured it would more likely be the 25th-31st OA pick than top-3.
But those deals are exactly why 1st round picks are almost always protected these days.
