They could probably manage it the way Tampa did. I don't think the NHL really audits the system when it comes to holding players out and keeping player on LTIR longer than they need to be. Kucherov was in full contact practices and scrimmages and after it was reported and footage was released questioning why he was still on LTIR, Tampa took him out of practices to hide it.
Of course, the players would have to agree to it and I don't think it is a given that they would. Most would not agree to sit out past the trade deadline if they didn't have to. Unless it was a situation, like with Kucherov, where surgery is elected that most teams trying to make the playoffs would put off until after the season. Plus, I think some Karlsson and Stone likely want to play in the Olympics and wouldn't sit out past the trade deadline for that reason, so yeah, Vegas will likely have trouble pulling off a Tampa.
