I have been trying to digest this.
It seems like an over-the-top payment for an injured Eichel who may never be the same again (I hope Calgary got some good advice from top-notch surgeons).
However, this price seems like it is from 'fair' to 'bargain' for a centre of Eichel's calibre. Yes, some of you don't agree, but I see Eichel as a top 5 centre in the NHL (when healthy at least).
I am interested to know what the prospects are, but the real question is how much value does Tkachuk have. REALLY have? We know he is going to ask and sit out for 'Eichel Money'. He has that QO next season, and potentially turning UFA. If he is traded in this upcoming off-season without a long-term deal in place, how much value does he really have? I don't know. 2 1st round picks? Seems like you won't get a replacement for Tkachuk with 2 mid-range first round picks. He is essentially going to be a season long rental with an opportunity to re-sign (assuming he isn't set on going to St. Louis). I don't really know what his value is floating around at right now given his circumstances. What does Buffalo flip him for? Watch them turn around and flip him to Vegas for Krebs + a 1st.
So, all in it is:
Tkachuk
1st round pick
Pelletier or Zary or Coronato or Valimaki or Monahan (Probably not, but is the only other former 1st round pick by Calgary)
2 other prospects not named above
That's actually ok for me. However, I see Tkachuk as either 'gone' or 'soon to be overpaid by a lot', so I would rather package him up with other assets and get a better player back. Eichel - IF HEALTHY (this is the scary part for me) - is definitely worth that and more. Probably a healthy amount more IMO.
I talked myself into it. Make it happen.
Now, if this falls through, I will anticipate Calgary will be shopping Tkachuk around in a 'hockey trade', as I imagine this will close the door for him on re-signing (though maybe he will be 'all-business' anyway? It wasn't like Calgary was going to get a home-town discount at all).
Interesting. I just wonder if this is really true.
