From his perspective, it would appear to be dealt with and not as serious in nature as what we know now.
There is literally nothing for him to try and do in that scenario.
If he knew there was a sexual assault, different situation and everyone in that room should have done more.
We really need to know what was said in that meeting and when further information came to light before issuing full judgment.

Immediate suspension pending investigation is warranted for that. Not “let go later in the summer”.
