For me, Tkachuk moving makes sense for both teams and addresses the lion's share of the salary swap needed. Then you're down to prospects and picks, plus maybe an ok defenceman with upside - all things the Flames can absorb while still icing a competitive team next year.

I'm pretty ambivalent about the trade happening at all, but just have a hard time seeing it based around someone other than Tkachuk on the Flames side of the ledger.

Who knows though - these blockbusters usually surprise.
I don’t see having $19M tied up in two players as a bad thing. This is the way the league is headed.

I don’t think Buffalo would be all that enamoured with Tkachuk’s contract status. I imagine he would be a strong flight risk. Especially for a team that is in Buffaloes position. That alone would scare me if I were Buffalo. They’re going to want young controllable assets, not guys who could walk at the end of next year. At least not the primary piece in the return, which Tkachuk certainly would be.

It has been reported that Buffalo will not retain salary, but will take a contract back with one or two years remaining. My Gawd, is that Sean Monahan’s music??
As for the young controllable assets, BUF can take two of Zary, Pel, Valamaki, Coronato, Dube and a 1st.
