Typically it's not the team that decides to trigger a rebuild out of the blue, but the results on the ice that that dictate things such as roster turnover and drafting higher. That could change the direction really quickly and you can't look at what is happening today and assume the plan carries over two to three years from now.
If an Eichel trade backfires and Gaudreau doesn't sign, it might not even be a decision to rebuild or not.

You should know that I really mulled over an appropriate word to use, which is why I qualified it as a "BIT of a delusion." Sorry about that.
I still think that even within a worst case scenario a rebuild for the Flames is highly unlikely. I have maintained for a long time that a Gaudreau extension seems like it could be tied to an Eichel acquisition, and even if he leaves via free agency, that is not money tbat will simply go unused. With Sutter coaching this team next year it strikes me as quite improbable that the Flames would find themselves much lower in the Standings than the low-20s.
A rebuild is not on tbe horizon.
