Hardly a blanket statement and has been an issue in Alberta for decades. I am also not pretending that native albertans (if there is such a thing anymore) dont also have those problems, just like not all junkies in vancouver are from alberta....
Sorry, Mel, we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one. Do you work in addictions, homelessness, etc?

A couple of things:
-homelessness was huge in Calgary/Alberta before any of our past "big booms"
-yes, some people move here but a lot of the time they come here for a job already in place
-yes, there are some that come to Alta w/out a job. However, it is extremely hard not to....when Alberta is basically screaming for people to come and take those jobs. If they didn't, there would be an even greater shortage of workers in Alberta
-It is NOT easy to just pick up and move. Whether you hitchhike all the way or not (which itself is fairly dangerous), you are ignoring the fact that a lot of homeless people don't have money to move. However "cheap" you do it, it still costs money.
-there were addictions in alberta before, during and after any of the booms or busts.
