If Eichel's camp is saying that his health situation is getting progressively worse, that is a poor prognostic sign for his recovery. That's not to say that he won't recover, but the extent of his recovery is likely going to be less the longer this drags on.
At this point, I wonder if Buffalo is refusing to allow him to go forward with his preferred surgery because their doctors believe that he has a contraindication to the disc replacement surgery, such as excessive kyphosis, ligamentum flavum hypertrophy, or facet joint disease. Cervical disc replacement in general results in better range of motion and less arthritis in adjacent joints compared with fusion surgery, but it isn't for everyone, and for patients with lumbar spinal disc disease, disc replacement surgery is generally inferior to fusion surgery due to the increased incidence of adverse effects/failure resulting from the disc replacement being put under too much stress.
