I saw a tweet earlier in this thread that Eichel isn’t listed on LTIR right now… this is because Buffalo needs his salary to meet the cap floor, correct? The problem is that the flames would need him to be on LTIR in order to acquire him without sending back $8.9 million in salary.

So I’m wondering if this would work under the salary cap rules:

1. Flames trade Zadorov + Valimaki to the sabres for future considerations (e.g. a 6th round pick). That’s $5.3 million in combined salary cap hit. I think that’s enough to keep Buffalo above the cap floor even without eichel. Buffalo now can put eichel on LTIR.

2. Flames trade Pelletier + Zary/Coronato + 2022 first round pick for Eichel (who is on LTIR).

Does this work to make it so Calgary does not need to send back a total of $8.9 million in salary cap space? I know that something will have to happen to make room for eichel as some point but that could be delayed till either the trade deadline or the offseason if eichel is not ready till the playoffs. This allows Calgary to keep Monahan as long as they can. Injuries could come up later that make room for eichel during the season or he could come back just in time for the playoffs when the salary cap doesn’t matter.

I’m not sure if any of this is possible or if trading a player on LTIR works that way. I hear some people say the flames need to be under the cap including Eichel’s salary when they acquire him even if he is on LTIR. Is that true? I’ve never heard exactly how this works.
