I think most Eichel trade advocates are well aware this season could be a write off if he’s acquired, due to the cost. But they are willing to do it to obtain an elite 1C which is hard to get any other way absent a very high draft pick. If Eichel only had one more year on his contact there would be little interest from the Flames.

That said, depending on the price, the season could also be salvaged. Losing, say, Monahan and Valimaki could be absorbed.
