True, Buffalo could flip Tkachuk whether that be this season, or offseason. I’m sure there would be no shortage of teams interested in Tkachuk. That said, I think fans underestimate how difficult it is to make moves of this magnitude. Pretty sure Buffalo would rather acquire the types of assets they are looking for in the one trade they are going to have to make.

If the Flames are looking to acquire Eichel, it’s to take a step forward into being a contender. Trading Tkachuk, especially for a player that would be out for 4 months after the trade(?), seems to fly in the face of that. Are the Flames a playoff team without Tkachuk or Eichel in the line up? Maybe, but it gets a whole lot tougher. Especially if they encounter any other injury/covid situations. I don’t see the Flames taking that risk. Trading significant assets for Eichel only to jeopardize this season seems unlikely to me. If there is a deal to be had, I think the Flames are offering up Dube, Valimaki or Kylington, and a 1st as the key components of a deal.

My bet is the Flames do not ante up at the end of the day. I would start looking at teams like the habs, and others, who are well out of the playoff picture by Nov 1st and seeing what might be out there.

Agreed, Tkachuk doesn't make sense for them, and asking them to flip him is just asking them to do the work. For them, Tkachuk doesn't move the needle and is likely not the piece they are looking for. It would be a better scenario for the Flames to trade Tkachuk and acquire the assets to make the Buffalo trade work. This is unlikely to happen though as the Flames need to focus on the playoffs.
