I think a case could be made that hockey, at least in my experience, is a particularly homophobic sport. The homophobia is so internalized that when abuse like this happens, victims don't want to come forward because they don't want the stigma of being a) a victim of abuse; and b) labeled as being gay.

Just look at how Beach and Black Ace 1 were treated in the aftermath by other players. Look at Getzlaf pulling a Roger Millions during play on an NHL broadcast in 2017 and barely getting a slap on the wrist.

And if those kinds of comments and behaviours are happening at the NHL level, you know sure as shinguard that it's happening in minor hockey, in major junior, etc.
