The quality of projection technology has improved significantly in recent years. Disney has been incorporating projections into their fireworks shows for a few years now and it looks quite impressive.

The drawing describes it as ribbon projection. The common term is projection mapping. It is extremely cool and looks fantastic. A few good examples to Google or YouTube include "Sak's Fifth Avenue Light Show", "San Antonio Cathedral Light Show"
The current Van Gogh exhibit in Calgary uses similar technology. The side of the arena would be a blank canvas. Anything is possible.
