Default Windshield cracks

Just bought a new car about a month ago, and sunday morning i noticed a crack had developed near the bottom of the windshield on the drivers side....

I hadn't noticed it the day before, and if it was there i would of noticed it...

Couple of Q's

If you are driving on a highway and another car spits a rock at your windshield does the crack develope right away? Or does it slowly appear over some time...Does the rock usually leave a mark on the windshield?

The crack seems to be a split and both sides of the windshield are smooth when you run your finger over the crack, in other words you can't feel any of the edges and there doesnt appear to be a mark from a rock or anything.

Could this just be a defect? The crack seems to be getting longer..How do you know if this is a defect and would this be covered under a warranty (by that i mean as anyone had something like this fixed under warranty)

Just want to hear some feedback before i go down to the dealership to raise cain.

thx
