He had to extend in Buffalo. They owned his rights and he had no leverage. At the end of this contract Calgary will have not hold his rights and the only leverage they have will be the 8th year of a possible contract.

No, they go down. You can only have so many high priced players, and three guys north of $9M on the forward lines is not sustainable for a team.

Yes, he is. He has never played a full season in the NHL. What would you call a player that has missed 35, 14, 5, 15, and 21 games in the last five seasons? That is injury prone.
There are reasons to trade for the guy, but there are just as many to bow out of this and press forward with what we have.
