I think that a defenseman, probably Valimaki or Kylington, is a part of the package for Eichel. You don't sign Zadorov or Gudbranson at those price tags to have them be the 7th defenseman. Maybe their play can be deserving of being a 7th defender (not Gudbranson at the moment though), but the price tag attached to either of them suggest that they're both expected to have a higher role on the team.

They're carrying 8 defenseman, which isn't out of the norm, but it makes more sense to only carry 7 defenseman. 12 out of 32 teams are carrying 8 defensemen at the current time. There is value to have 8 defensemen, especially in the playoffs, but something about the Flames situation tells me that they're waiting on moving one of them out.

So, one of them is being included in a package to go to Buffalo.
