I've heard some fringe hard core fans dislike the movie because they have left out a lot of information... like the 'Choam' (which, iirc, is essentially the company that stockpiles and distributes the spice to the universe...like The East Indian Trading Company, 10,000 years into the future, and whom the caretakers of Arrakis get to skim money off the top)...
So some hardcore fans are upset because the movie isn't granular enough (did anyone really miss the dinner scene or the conservatory scene?) but the regular movie goer already think its much too long... Its super hard to pass information in a movie... you could do a movie scroll, a la Star Wars to pass on a preface,,,, or you could resort to exposition dumps or internal monologues like Lynch did - skip to 54 second mark
Villeneuve distilled the story to something reasonably close that could be actually be made into a 2hr 40 min movie...but not everyone is going to happy with the result...

Every now and then Cage makes a movie that reminds you how bloody brilliant an actor he is when he wants and gets the right script, Adaption was a superb film
