I read Dune as a teenager, strangely while I enjoyed it I never thought it was anything other than a good bit of escapism unlike Bradbury or Phillip K Dick.
The strange thing now is of course that the hero's in the book, nomadic desert tribesmen fighting against an oppressive colonial power who wish to ravage their land in pursuit of the raw material that allows all space travel, a thinly veiled reference to Oil in Saudi Arabia, takes on a whole new meaning after 9/11, I wonder if Osama is a weirding word?
