I think(/hope) you're missing the target of keenan87's criticism. TheAthletic needs some degree of free access in order to entice people to subscribe. I'm personally not a fan of blanket "five free articles a month" as a traditional newspaper like WSJ might limit you to, nor am I fan of one-time free trials but what I would propose is perhaps "one free article
per author (bi-?)monthly". This would account for the dynamic nature of their writer roster.
